What attracted you to the DTF Graduate program?
When the time came to seriously think about a full time job, I found the DTF Graduate Program stood out in terms of the opportunities available, the support provided and the very competitive entry-level salary. There is alsoa wide variety of training offered and professional development is encouraged.

Also, shortly following the completion of the Graduate Program I was permanently appointed to a Contract Manager position back in the DTF Health Cluster and I am confident that the support and opportunities provided to me as a graduate was one of the main reasons I was competitive as an applicant.

In a nutshell what did you achieve in your graduate year in Government Procurement?
During my graduate year I was involved in developing contracts on behalf of numerous government departments.

During this rotation I also took up the opportunity to work for three months with the DTF Health Cluster. Here I was given the opportunity to run my own processes for highly technical medical equipment which was certainly a challenge but nevertheless very interesting.

I was also involved in Strategic Sourcing and as a Contract Manager I was responsible for:

  • managing the ten contracted recruitment firms which had a turnover of approximately $50 million annually;
  • coordinating contract variations; providing advice to government departments to ensure they were using the contract appropriately and efficiently.

In a nutshell what did you achieve in your graduate year in Government Procurement?
While I knew joining the graduate program was a positive step for my career, I wasn’t really sure what I would be doing in my role.

For the first 5 months I worked in central office in Client Procurement Services. In this role I helped prepare tender documents, evaluate bids and award contracts for the following goods and services for WA Government agencies:

  • Department of Health:
    medical equipment for Bunbury Hospital
  • Drug and Alcohol Office:
advertising campaigns (Drug Aware and Enough Is Enough – Alcohol)
  • Department of Agriculture and Food:
pest detector dogs, expert consultancies and seeding equipment
  • Perth Market Authority:
    cleaning and landscaping services
  • Department of Sport and Recreation: signage services

I next worked at the Department of Corrective Services for 2 months to help with their procurement. As well as preparing tenders, in this role I was also involved in managing and extending contracts in relation to WA’s prison system.

The work I have been involved with is critical to government.

Adam, Procurement Graduate 2007

What attracted you to the DTF Graduate program?
The work in procurement is dynamic and engaging and involves contact with a range of different people throughout government. Procuring goods and services is central to any project and you are exposed to a number of them across government and the people leading them.

Procurement is a great place to work. The people are friendly and supportive and allow you a fair amount of flexibility and autonomy when completing your work. There is a great demand for procurement professionals in business and there are many opportunities to advance your career.

I have been involved in a number of interesting projects during my time in procurement. I developed a number of IT contracts including contracts for document management systems, system maintenance, project directors and video conferencing equipment. I also managed a multi-million dollar contract for training courses for all Government Agencies.
