First Home Owner Grant

As part of the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) on the reform of Commonwealth-State Financial Relations signed in June 1999, the States and Territories have agreed to provide financial assistance to Australians who are buying their first home through the establishment of the First Home Owner Grant (FHOG).

The scheme commenced on 1 July 2000. Eligible applicants are entitled to a one-off $7,000 grant providing they meet the Scheme’s eligibility criteria. Legislation to support this scheme was assented to on 9 June 2000. A copy of the Act can be purchased from the State Law Publisher, 10 William Street, Perth.

First Home Owners Grant Boost (FHOB)

The Australian Government has introduced a First Home Owners Boost, which is in addition to the WA Government funded $7,000 First Home Owner Grant.

The First Home Owners Boost Scheme applies to contracts dated between 14 October 2008 and 31 December 2009 (inclusive). For owner builder's construction must have commenced between those dates.

The announcement from the Australian Government specified the following:

For contracts made between 14 October 2008 and 30 September 2009 the boost provides for an:

  • Extra $7,000 for buying an established home
  • Extra $14,000 for buying or building a new home

For contracts made between 1 October 2009 to 31 December 2009 the boost provides for an:

  • Extra $ 3,500 for buying an established home.
  • Extra $7,000 for buying or building a new home

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for a First Home Owners Boost benefit, first homebuyers must satisfy the requirements of the existing $7,000 First Home Owner Grant and the additional First Home Owner Boost requirements.

Established Home:

To apply for the First Home Owners Boost for an established home, first homeowners will only need to complete the $7,000 First Home Owner Grant application form (July 2007)

New Home:

To apply for the First Home Owners Boost for building a new home or purchasing a newly constructed home, first homeowners will need to complete the Addendum for First Home Owners Boost Scheme (July 2009) and The $7,000 First Home Owner Grant application form (July 2007).

Note: If you have already lodged your First Home Owner Grant application (July 2007), you are required to complete and lodge the First Home Owners Boost addendum (July 2009) with the same agent you lodged the First Home Owner Grant application (July 2007) with for processing.

Home Buyers Assistance Account - Assistance of up to $2,000, established under the Real Estate and Business Agents Act.

This grant is administered by the Real Estate and Business Agents Supervisory Board.
